Skirting Board FAQs
Are skirting boards necessary?

Skirting boards aren’t required, but they’re very common because they offer both practical and decorative benefits.

Practical benefits:

  • Protects walls: Reduces scuffs and marks from vacuums, furniture and everyday use.

  • Hides gaps: Covers the natural expansion gap between the wall and floor for a clean finish.

  • Maintains structure: Floors expand and contract over time; skirting keeps this space hidden without affecting performance.

Aesthetic benefits:

  • Gives a room a neat, finished look.

  • Helps visually blend the floor and wall for a balanced appearance.

How are skirting boards attached?

Skirting boards can be fixed to walls in a few different ways, depending on the wall type and the finish you want.

Common methods:

  • Screws and wall plugs: Ideal for solid masonry walls. Pre-drill, plug, and screw the board in place. Screw heads can be filled for a smooth finish.
  • Nails: Best for stud walls. Locate the studs and nail through the skirting into the timber behind the plasterboard.
  • Adhesive: Suitable for most walls, especially when aiming for a clean look with no visible fixings. Apply construction adhesive and press firmly into place.

Tip:

It's common to use adhesive for strength, and a couple of nails just to hold the board while the adhesive sets.

What is the best wood for skirting boards?

The best material for skirting boards depends on your budget, style, and how you plan to decorate the room. The three most common options are oak, pine, and MDF, each with its own benefits.

Oak Skirting Boards

A premium choice known for durability and style. Oak is a hardwood with a natural grain that looks great varnished or stained. It’s strong, long-lasting, and ideal for homes where you want a high-quality finish.

Pine Skirting Boards

A more affordable natural wood option. Pine is easier to cut and install, making it great for DIY. It suits both painted and lightly stained finishes. It is softer than oak, so it may dent more easily and needs sealing to prevent moisture damage.

MDF Skirting Boards

A cost-effective choice, especially for painted finishes. MDF offers a smooth, clean surface ideal for modern interiors. It’s less suitable for damp rooms, as it can swell if exposed to moisture.

For a premium, timeless look, choose oak. For natural warmth on a budget, pine works well. For a smooth, modern painted finish, MDF is the best value.
